When All You Can Do Is Love Them

It’s Enough.
When you don’t know how to fix it,
But you say,
“I’m here for you. I’m listening,”
It’s enough.
When you wish for a magic wand to take away the loneliness,
But can’t find one…
So you softly whisper, “I’ll be your friend,”
It’s enough.
When you look for a map
That’d take you back to yesterday
So you could fix everything…
But there is none,
So instead, you say, “I’m sorry,”
It’s enough.
When life is changing yet again,
And you want to keep them safe forever,
Safe from worry. Safe from fear. Safe from hurt.
But you know you can’t — not always,
So you promise,
“I love you forever. And God does too,”
It’s enough.
When they’re failing, or crying, or losing, or hurting,
And you’re hurting too-
So you let them know, “I hurt with you,”
It’s enough.
When you wish you could take their sickness upon you —
You’d take the fever, the aches, the gasps —
But you can’t…
So you lay down beside them, and comfort, “I’m here,”
It’s enough.
I know, my Dears.
I know, because I wish that I could
Protect you from it all
Prepare you for it all
Lead you through it all,
I’d make sure you’d never fall.
But I can’t.
So instead, I’ll hold you close, and whisper
What you really need to hear —
“Your family and Jesus are always near.
Wherever you are?
That’s where our love goes.”
And maybe tonight,
You’ll breathe deeply.
Maybe tonight,
You’ll sleep tight.
Maybe tonight…
Those reminders of love?
Those comforting hugs?
They’re enough.
{Pssst, Mamas: Remember…
All those things you cannot do?
There is One who can.
So trust Him. And trust them to Him.
